Reverend Flora Harris

Associate Minister

Rev. Flora Harris was born in Niagara Falls, New York and then grew up in Bridgeport Connecticut. She earned a Masters in Counseling from the University of Bridgeport. She considers herself to be a lifelong learner, earning certificates in biblical studies from various institutions including Hartford CT Seminary. 

She considers part of her  spiritual calling is  to advocate for the less fortunate and empower them for positive change. Rev. Harris has  also  worked in Human Services for more than 35 years. Currently, she is a program director for a family support program with the Bridgeport Board of Education.  

Rev. Harris was the first President of the Board of Directors for the  Bethel Recovery  Center  in  Bridgeport CT, a member of the educational task force for the Bridgeport Child Advocacy Coalition.  As a community organizer she played a pivotal role in the election of the first African American councilman  (Deacon Lewis Davis)  in Stratford.  Her volunteerism earned her a citation from the State of Connecticut Attorney General’s office.  She participates in other numerous boards and charitable organizations. 

Rev Harris has been a member of First Baptist Church for  nearly  40 years.   Rev. Harris was ordained to Christian ministry by the First Baptist Church  in 1992. As an associate minister  Rev. Harris serves on the Outreach Ministries team which provides Chaplain  Services  to local prisons, hospitals  and convalescent homes.   She also sang in the Gospel Choir,  a member of Jr.  Missionaries  and  served on the inaugural Family and Friends Day Committee.  Under the teachings of Pastor William B. Sutton III, Rev Harris was trained in the first Evangelism Explosion Training at First Baptist Church.  She also conducted  Bible study classes  for displaced women and mothers  at the Bethel Recovery Center for more than 20 years.  

Sharing her life and ministry is her husband of  nearly 40  years;  Deacon Walter Harris. They have two daughters, Serita and Alisha. Their extended family includes an adopted son who is married and has two children.
